What a mock is for

A mock exam answers a question that practice questions cannot, which is whether your knowledge holds up across 170 questions, two sessions and more than five hours of concentration. Subject practice tells you what you know. A mock tells you whether you can use it under the conditions the SRA sets.

Used well, a mock also produces a subject-by-subject breakdown that directs the final weeks of revision. Used badly, it is a long afternoon that produces a percentage and nothing else.

The conditions a realistic mock reproduces

From January 2027 SQE1 consists of two assessments, FLK1 and FLK2, each with 170 single best answer questions. Each is split into two sessions of 85 questions lasting 2 hours 33 minutes, with a 60-minute break between them. Each session covers a fixed group of subjects, and the questions are randomised within it.

A mock that shortens the sessions, presents questions in subject blocks or allows you to pause the clock removes the things it is meant to test.

What to check before relying on a mock

• Every question has five options and one single best answer. Questions with four options or with "all of the above" do not match the assessment.
• Questions are scenario-based. A question that asks you to define a term tests recall, and SQE1 tests application.
• The subject mix stays within the SRA's 2019 blueprint ranges. A mock that is half contract law will flatter a contract specialist.
• Every question has an explanation covering all five options. The review is where the value lies.
• Ethics and professional conduct appear across subjects, as they do in the real assessments.
• Tax questions give the rates and thresholds needed, as the SRA's specification does for assessments from September 2026.

When to sit a mock

A mock sat before you have covered the syllabus measures gaps you already know about. Most candidates get more from a first full mock four to six weeks before the exam, once every subject has been studied at least once. That leaves time to act on the result.

A second mock in the final fortnight checks that the weak subjects have improved and gives one more rehearsal of the timing. Sitting more than three or four full mocks rarely adds much, because each takes a full day including review.

How to sit a mock

1. Choose a day with no other commitments and start at the time of your real sitting.
2. Take the break between sessions, and no more than the break.
3. Do not look anything up. The point is to find out what you know without help.
4. Mark the questions you are unsure of, answer them anyway, and move on. There is no negative marking.
5. Note the time at the 42 and 85 question marks. A steady pace of about 1.8 minutes a question puts you at about 1 hour 16 minutes after 42 questions.

How to review the result

The score matters less than the pattern behind it. Sort the wrong answers by subject and by reason. Some will be gaps in knowledge, some will be misreadings of the scenario, and some will be timing errors made in the last twenty questions of a session.

For each wrong answer, write down the rule in one sentence and the reason the distractor was tempting. Return to those rules a week later with fresh questions. The subjects with the most entries go to the top of the study plan for the remaining weeks.
