The SRA announced the fees in April 2026. They apply to any candidate who books to sit from October 2026. A candidate who sits SQE1 in one year and SQE2 in the next pays each stage at the rate for the year of booking.
What a resit adds
SQE2 has no pass for a single station, so a resit is the whole exam at the full fee. Three attempts are allowed within six years of your first SQE assessment. Results come about 15 weeks after the last assessment day, so a resit is usually two sittings later. The calculator above adds a resit with its fee and a second round of travel and time off.
Travel and time off
The written exam is three half-days at a Pearson VUE test centre, in the UK or abroad. The oral exam is two half-days at a venue in Birmingham, Cardiff, London or Manchester, and there are no other oral venues. A candidate from outside the UK, or far from those cities, should budget for travel and accommodation for the oral days. Time off counts what a day away from work costs you, for study days and the five half-days of assessment.
What preparation costs
Preparation is the part of the total you control, and the range is wide. These are the prices advertised by UK providers in October 2026.
| Type of preparation | Advertised price |
|---|---|
| Self-marked mock packs, no feedback | about £15 to £99 |
| Mocks marked by a tutor | about £96 to £399 |
| SQE2 short course | from about £1,150 |
| SQE2 full course | about £2,000 to £6,400 |
| SQE1 and SQE2 course together | about £4,900 to over £12,000 |
Our own plans are £49 a month or £129 for 3 months for SQE2. SQE2 Full cycle is £219 for 7 months. The SQE1 + SQE2 bundle is £299 for 18 months, £99 less than SQE1 Full cycle and SQE2 Full cycle bought separately. A learner who already has SQE1 Full cycle can add SQE2 for £120. Every SQE2 answer is marked against the SRA's criteria. The marking is automated, and the plans do not include tutor teaching.
Spending the preparation budget
The skill SQE2 tests is writing and speaking under time. Whatever you buy, check that it gives you timed tasks in each skill and feedback against the SRA's criteria. Reading material alone does not prepare for that. The SQE 1 and 2 prep course page compares the ways to prepare for both stages, and the SQE1 cost page covers the SQE1 side in detail.
Questions candidates ask
The SRA's SQE2 fee is £3,086 for candidates booking to sit from October 2026, which includes the October 2026 and January 2027 sittings. The fee for 2025/26 was £2,974.
The exam fees for SQE1 and SQE2 together are £5,092 for bookings from October 2026: £2,006 for SQE1 and £3,086 for SQE2. Preparation, travel and any resit come on top.
A resit is the whole of SQE2, all 16 stations, so it costs the full SQE2 fee for the year you book it. That is £3,086 for bookings from October 2026. The SRA reviews its fees each year.
No. The fee pays for the assessments only. The SRA does not require a course, and any course, book or practice platform is bought separately.
The oral exam is two half-days at a venue in Birmingham, Cardiff, London or Manchester. Unless you live near one, add travel and perhaps a night's accommodation. The written exam is at a Pearson VUE test centre.
The SRA charges £265 to apply for an exemption. Exemptions are open only to qualified lawyers, and the [SQE2 exemption](/sqe2-exemption) page explains who can apply.
